Mathematics Narrative Assessment

Learner: Helen  Learning Coach:  Mr Hattie          Date: 23 September2016
Learning Area: Learning Habitat 1 - Mathematics
Learning Observed
Helen was working with Miss Denuwara today on her basic facts. This has been something that she has been focusing on most of the term. Helen was trying to use the strategy of rounding and compensating to solve the basic facts. This is where you round on of the numbers up to the nearest 10 and you take that number from the other number, for example 8+5= Round 8 up to 10 by taking 2 from the 5 and adding it to the 10. This leaves you with 10+3. This makes the problem more manageable. Helen was using the vision principle of Capable as she was trying to improve her skills in mathematics. Helen said that she likes this strategy as she make make hard problems easier.

Next Learning Steps
Helen’s next steps are to:
  • Use rounding and compensating by imaging in her head.
  • Practice basic multiplication facts by halving and doubling with materials.
  • Use rounding and compensating to help solve fraction problems.
